General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) announced that in the last five months of 2022, China’s imports and exports of mechanical and electrical products totaled US$1240.7 billion, 5.4 percent higher than a year prior. Besides, exports grew by 9.0 percent to US$801.6 billion, and imports dropped by 0.5 percent to US$439.1 billion. The trade balance of mechanical and electrical products expanded US$68.3 billion to US$362.5 billion in surplus.

The gradual resumption of production in Shanghai and other places, as well as the centralized shipments after logistics relief, together drove the exports of mechanical and electrical products in May to grow by 9.5 percent year-on-year to US$167.7 billion, maintaining the positive growth for 24 consecutive months. The growth rate was 9.4 percentage points higher than that of the previous month, with a month-on-month growth of 8.5 percent. In May, China’s imports of mechanical and electrical products reached US$84.1billion, which decreased by 8.3 percent year-on-year, the negative growth for the third consecutive month.

In May, exports of integrated circuits, mobile phones, motor vehicles, parts and accessories of vehicle and other products increased, while the exports of automatic data processing machines and parts thereof, household appliances and audio or video devices and parts thereof decreased year-on-year.

In May, the recovery of supply, acceleration of operation by domestic manufacturers and the rise of average unit price drove the shipment and export value of mobile phones to increase by 4.4 percent and 14 percent respectively; sluggish demand and blocked supply led to decrease of 5.5 percent in exports of automatic data processing machines and parts thereof, the second consecutive month of decline; shipment of integrated circuits decreased by 6.8 percent, the negative growth for the third consecutive month, and the export value increased by 18.1percent driven by unit price; exports of household appliances decreased by 8.2 percent for the fourth consecutive month; shipment and export value of motor vehicles increased by 35.1 percent and 47.4 percent respectively.

In May, imports of integrated circuits, automatic data processing machines and parts thereof, vehicles, machine-tools and other mechanical and electrical products decreased. Affected by the blocked supply chain, fall in terminal demand and the high base, the import volume of integrated circuits fell by 8.7 percent, the sixth consecutive month of decline, and the import value fell by 2.4 percent to US$32.45billion, which was the first fall in the past 27 months. Besides, the continuous supply chain problems and sluggish market demand led to the year-on-year decline of motor vehicles imports for the tenth consecutive month, and the sixth consecutive month for the parts and accessories of vehicle.
